Readings and Prayers for Mothering Sunday

Mothering Sunday

The Collect:  God of compassion, whose Son Jesus Christ, the child of Mary, shared the life of a home in Nazareth, and on the cross drew the whole human family to Himself; Strengthen us in our daily living that in joy and in sorrow we may know the power of your presence to bind together and to heal; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.  Amen

The Epistle is written in the 3rd v. of the 1st Ch. of St. Paul’s 2nd letter to the Corinthians:

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God. For just as the sufferings of Christ flow over into our lives, so also through Christ our comfort overflows. If we are distressed, it is for your comfort and salvation; if we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which produces in you patient endurance of the same sufferings we suffer. And our hope for you is firm, because we know that just as you share in our sufferings, so also you share in our comfort.

This is the Word of the Lord All: Thanks be to God

Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to St. Luke:  All: Glory to You, O Lord

The child’s father and mother were amazed at what was being said about Jesus. Then Simeon blessed them and said to His mother Mary, “This child is destined for the falling and the rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be opposed so that the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed ~ and a sword will pierce your own soul too.”

This is the Gospel of the Lord: All: Praise to You, O Christ

To the words Lord of Love, please respond ‘hear our prayer’

Gracious God, on this special day we thank you for mothers – our own mothers and mothers everywhere. We thank you for their often unconditional love and selfless love.. Lord of love:

We thank you for all that mothers do, or once did, all they give, or once gave, all they mean and will always mean. Lord of love:

Grant to all entrusted with the responsibility of motherhood your wisdom, your guidance and your support. We pray for all mothers who have struggled over the past year, often juggling home and schooling with their own workload. We pray fand give thanks for the many roles they have adopted during the periods of lockdown and for their enduring patience in such difficult times  Lord of love:

We thank you that you love us as a mother loves her children, passionately, fiercely, devotedly, wholeheartedly, and that , like a mother, you watch over us every moment of every day, seeking our welfare, concerned about our progress, equipping us for the journey of life. Lord of love:

Gracious God, thank you that you are always there when we need you, ready to comfort, encourage and reassure us, slow to punish and swift to bless. Help us to be increasingly less independent and more dependent upon your love and guidance. Lord of love:

Loving God, as we thank you for mothers who are still with us, we remember all those whose mothers are now in your loving eternal care. We thank you that their memory lives on through all they did during their earthly lives and the legacies of skill and knowledge they have left behind. May they forever dwell in the peace of your eternity Lord of love:

Merciful God, we pray for mothers who have lost children, particularly those who have lost their children over the past very difficult year. Help them to know that they are never alone and that they might lean on you in their pain and surround them with people of empathy and warm compassion. Lord of love:

Gracious God, we call you ‘Our Father’ but equally you are our Mother. Help us to continue to learn all that means and to always rejoice in that truth.

Lord of love: accept these prayers for the sake of Your Son, our Saviour, Jesus Christ. Amen
