Readings and Prayers for Epiphany

Feast of The Epiphany

The Collect:  O God, who by the leading of a star manifested your only Son to the peoples of the earth: Mercifully grant that we, who know you now by faith, may at last behold your glory face to face; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.  Amen

The Epistle is written in the 3rd chapter of St. Paul’s Letter to the Ephesians:

For this reason I, Paul, the prisoner of Christ Jesus for the sake of you Gentiles ~ Surely you have heard about the administration of God’s grace that was given to me for you, that is, the mystery made known to me by revelation, as I have already written briefly. In reading this, then, you will be able to understand my insight into the mystery of Christ, which was not made known in other generations as it has now been revealed by the Spirit to God’s holy apostles and prophets. This mystery is that through the gospel the Gentiles are heirs together with Israel, members together of one body, and sharers together in the promise in Christ Jesus. I became a servant of this gospel by the gift of God’s grace given me through the working of His power. Although I am less than the least of all God’s people, this grace was given me: to preach to the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ, and to make plain to everyone the administration of this mystery, which for ages past was kept hidden in God, who created all things. His intent was that now, through the church, the manifold wisdom of God should be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly realms, according to His eternal purpose which He accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord. In Him and through faith in Him we may approach God with freedom and confidence.

This is the Word of the Lord:  All: Thanks be to God

Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to St. Matthew:  Glory to You, O Lord

After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem and asked, “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw His star in the east and have come to worship Him.” When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him. When he had called together all the people’s chief priests and teachers of the law, he asked them where the Christ was to be born. “In Bethlehem in Judea,” they replied, “for this is what the prophet has written: “‘But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for out of you will come a ruler who will be the shepherd of my people Israel.'” Then Herod called the Magi secretly and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared. He sent them to Bethlehem and said, “Go and make a careful search for the child. As soon as you find Him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship Him.” After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen in the east went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was. When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. On coming to the house, they saw the child with His mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshipped Him. Then they opened their treasures and presented Him with gifts of gold, incense and myrrh. And having been warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, they returned to their country by another route.

 This is the Gospel of the Lord:  All: Praise to You, O Christ

PRAYERS

Today we recall the wise men who knelt before our Saviour, Let us also kneel to worship him with great joy and to make our prayer to His Heavenly Father;

Abba, Father, the wise men came from the east to worship your Son, grant to Christians everywhere a true spirit of adoration.  Lord in your mercy: Hear our Prayer

Abba Father, your Son is the King of kings, the Lord of lords, grant an abundance of peace to your world and help us to be instrumental in bringing about that peace within our daily lives. Teach us to continue faithfully on the path you set before us, remembering that true faith involves a journey of discovery as well as arrival at a destination. Lord in your mercy: Hear our Prayer

Heavenly Father, as the holy Family were forced to become refugees – we pray that You will soften the hearts and minds to the plight of all refugees today. We pray for all those with no home or homeland to call their own at this moment. Lord in your mercy: Hear our Prayer

Lord Jesus, as we leave 2020 and all the difficulties we have known, pour your blessings upon us, upon our families, our neighbours, our church community and the parish we serve. We pray for a better year for everybody with the roll out of vaccines and better treatments against the horrible virus which has held us all to ransom. We pray for your blessing upon all medics and scientists who are working so hard and all within government and power who still have difficult and unpopular decisions to make on our behalf. Lord in your mercy: Hear our Prayer

God of Healing, your Son came to earth as a weak and powerless for our sake; grant your healing love upon the poor and the powerless today, particularly the sick in body and mind or spirit.  Strengthen those who suffer and we pray for the healing of your Holy Spirit upon any known to us personally.Lord in your mercy…

Abba Father, the wise men presented to your Son, gold, incense and myrrh; accept the gifts we bring – our simple gifts of service, love and devotion. We pray that Christians the world over will grow in the strength and service and that this year will see love overcome the darkness of evil and your light will break through for all to see, in joyful worship and grateful praise. Lord in your mercy…

Holy Father, you are the King of Heaven, the hope of all who trust in you. We hold before you those departed this life in faith and trust in the past days and those whose anniversary falls at this time. May they rest in your eternal peace and their loved ones know your enduring compassion. Lord in your mercy….

Rejoicing in the fellowship of the wise men, the shepherds and angels and of the Blessed Virgin Mary and Saint Joseph, we commend ourselves and all creation to your unfailing love.  Merciful Father accept these prayers…
